Smith Mountain Lake Soccer Club is excited to announce our first ever "goalkeeper specific" camp.  Our goalkeeper camp, is a Level 1 Goalkeeper Camp and adheres to our club's Top Flight Keeper Training curriculum and will be led by goalkeeping expert and our Director of Coaching and Player Development, Kris McCoy and his staff of high level experienced goalkeepers and coaches.

Additionally, this camp satisfies the requirements necessary for all attending Smith Mountain Lake Soccer Club goalkeepers to pass their Level 1 Goalkeeping Assessments.  This camp will serve as an introduction to the goalkeeper position and provide attendees with the opportunity to learn and establish appropriate fundamentals of the goalkeeper position.

The technical focus of this camp includes but is not limited to: developing an appropriate stance, fundamental development of ball collection off the ground and out of the air, safe and effective low diving techniques that include both break-a-way saves and collapse dives, proper positioning and understanding of ball lines and shot angles, etc.

Attending goalkeepers will also be exposed to the most innovative, challenging and results proven forms of individual skills training that will not only prepare them for match like situations, but also assists in the development of intrinsic or internal motivation to aspire to improve.

The Level 1 Goalkeeper Camp is an "open" camp and is available for any goalkeepers ages U11 - U19.  It is currently scheduled for July 15 - July 17, 2015 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the fields of Stewartsville Elementary School.  Registration will open Monday, June 22, 2015 and will close on Friday, July 10, 2015.  The cost for this camp will be $125.00 per goalkeeper, if you register within the provided registration window.  Registrations will be considered after July 10, 2015, but will be done so on an individual basis with an additional $25.00 late registrant fee.

 NEW! Level 1 Goalkeeper Camp

At Smith Mountain Lake Soccer Club, we feel that participating in the Olympic Development Program (ODP) is both a unique and exceptional opportunity for our players.  Not only is ODP one of the feeder programs for the United States Men's and Women's National Teams, but it also provides players that make the teams, additional development and competitive opportunities that are second to none.  The benefits of participation include but are not limited to the following: 1. Next level development as a player. The opportunity to train and play with the best player's in one's age group. 2. Quality instruction from nationally licensed coaches. 3. Quality competition. Games against other state association ODP teams. 4. Exposure to regional and national team coaches. 5. The opportunity to represent one's state, region, or country in competition. 6. Exposure to college coaches, and so much more!  For a brief history and synopsis of how the ODP program works, continue reading below.

The Virginia Youth Soccer Association's Olympic Development Program has a designated five districts. The initial player identification stage begins with the District tryouts.  Players are selected, in most states, on the basis of open tryouts. These tryouts are conducted by state association coaches who are recognized for their ability to identify and train players with superior skills. Some state associations combine scouting techniques and invitations to certain players with the open tryouts. Selection of these players is not an easy task. The state association head coach or State Coach will, in most cases, be assisted in the selection process by several other qualified coaches from the club or league level. Players are evaluated on the four components that make up a soccer player: 1. Technique, 2. Tactics, 3. Fitness and Athletic Ability, 4. Psychological Component (attitude).  The District tryout registration fee is $40 online or $60 at the tryout site.  The registration link is taken down 7 days before the tryouts; registering online saves you $20.Once started, the District Pools will have ten training sessions.  Players can also be added to the district pool, at any time, through the scouting of games. The district training sessions are generally held on a Friday night or weekend day so as to minimize conflicts with other soccer activities the players may have.  For 2014-2015, the fee for District ODP is $315.00.  For additional information or to register for the upcoming ODP tryouts visit the ODP West District tryout page at http://www.vysa.com/odp/DistrictODP/109107.html
